Cumilla-7 by-Polls: Pran Gopal set to win unopposed

The former BSMMU VC Pran Gopal Datta scheduled to announce the Cumilla-7 MP candidate in the polls after the candidates have been withdrawn from the race.

Dulal Talukder, regional election officer in Cumilla Dulal Talukder, regional election officer in Cumilla, told The Daily Star that AL candidate Prof Pran is the sole person seeking a seat in the Parliament following NAP nominated Monirul Islam withdrew his candidature yesterday.

Prof. Pran will be declared as the winner in the polls, following the deadline for withdrawing candidature is 5:00 pm today.

This past Thursday Jatiya Party nominee Lutfar Reza retracted his nomination papers.

The seat was declared vacant on the 30th of July following the death of Ali Ashraf, then MP from the constituency, passed away in the Hospital in Dhaka.

The by-poll was set to take place on the 7th of October.

Six candidates submitted nomination forms. Three of them were declared qualified on September 14.

In response to the inquiry with Prof. Pran replied, "I was prepared and expected to participate in a competitive election."

NAP candidate Monirul Islam said, "I have withdrawn my candidature due to a family issue. There is nothing else behind the withdrawal."
